In 1967, I was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon with an official bib number. The race director was so infuriated that I, a woman, had entered his male-only race, he attacked me during the race and tried to rip the numbers off my body. My running buddy guy-friends bounced the official out of the race instead and I went on to finish. Since that time, the Legend of 261 has grown to symbolize fearlessness in the face of adversity, and women have spontaneously begun wearing the numbers to give themselves courage and heart…and to be fearless when it gets tough.
