Kathrine Switzer, born in 1947, was raised in a time that is hard for some of us to imagine. Girls were not encouraged — and were even unwelcome — to participate in sports like they are today.
Thanks to encouragement from her parents and the self-realization of how being athletic could help her in multiple aspects of life, Switzer went where women never went before.
Kathrine Switzer has long been one of running’s most iconic figures. Not just for breaking barriers as the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967, but also for creating positive global social change. Because of her millions of women are now empowered by the simple act of running.
