To the editor — For the second time in 14 years, the canyon was green for the annual Yakima River Canyon Marathon on April 5. The weather was the best ever and 17 participants kept their string going by completing their 14th marathon in the canyon.
Together with the Yakima Hard Core Runners Club and the organizing committee, Bob and I extend our thanks and appreciation to the communities of Yakima, Selah and Ellensburg, all of our sponsors and contributors and the many wonderful volunteers for their continuing support of this marathon.
World famous Kathrine Switzer, the first registered woman to run the Boston Marathon and recently inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, was the guest speaker. She hugged and high-fived most runners and walkers on the course. Kathrine was joined by her husband, Roger Robinson, world-class speaker/writer and former Olympian runner. They came from their New Zealand home with a stopover at our marathon on their way to their New York home.
We’re happy to announce that Martin Rudow, publisher and former editor of Northwest Runner magazine, will be the guest speaker next year as he shares pictorial memorabilia to help us celebrate the 15th annual Yakima River Canyon Marathon on March 28, 2015.
