In 1983, Kathrine and original race director Horst Milde founded this race with 243 women. Now it is the biggest women’s running event in Germany—18,500 women(!) and Horst’s son Mark is now the race director. The article cites the huge growth in women’s running, and quoting me for my current views as one of the founders in 1983 of the Avon Frauenauf Berlin, the first ever women’s only race in Germany and now the largest with over 18,500 women.
I plan to run it again this year, for the 30th anniversary, on May 4!
Kathrine Switzer has long been one of running’s most iconic figures. Not just for breaking barriers as the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967, but also for creating positive global social change. Because of her millions of women are now empowered by the simple act of running.
