1973 — fifty years ago — was a momentous year in Billie Jean King’s fight for gender equity in sports: the US Open became the first sporting event in history to offer equal prize money to both men and women competitors; the Women’s Tennis Association was created; and, that September, Billie Jean beat Bobby Riggs in the iconic “Battle of the Sexes.”
